Few writers did more to shape modern science fiction than Isaac Asimov. He was extraordinarily prolific, writing or editing hundreds of books across science fiction, popular science, history, biblical studies and numerous other subjects. Yet his greatest achievement may have been the creation of a vast fictional history in which robots, galactic empires and the rise and fall of civilizations became parts of a single story.
Asimov is best remembered for Foundation, I, Robot, the Robot novels and his concept of psychohistory. But his importance goes beyond individual books. He helped establish science fiction as a genre capable of asking serious questions about technology, human nature, politics and the future of civilization.
A Short Biography
Isaac Asimov was born in 1920 in Petrovichi, Russia, to a Jewish family. His family emigrated to the United States when he was a young child, and he grew up in Brooklyn, New York.
His family's business included candy stores, and these shops gave Asimov access to the pulp magazines that fascinated him as a boy. He began reading science fiction and quickly became fascinated with stories about the future, space travel and scientific technology.
Asimov studied chemistry at Columbia University. During the Second World War he worked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, where he encountered two other future science fiction giants, Robert A. Heinlein and L. Sprague de Camp.
He eventually earned a PhD in biochemistry and became a professor at Boston University.
But writing was becoming increasingly important.
Asimov eventually became one of the most prolific writers in history. He wrote about science, history, religion, literature and countless other subjects, but science fiction remained central to his reputation.
He died in 1992.
How Asimov Got Into Science Fiction
Asimov's involvement with professional science fiction began when he started submitting stories to the pulp magazines of the 1930s.
One of the most important publications in his career was Astounding Science-Fiction, edited by the legendary John W. Campbell Jr.
Campbell was enormously influential during the period that later became known as the Golden Age of Science Fiction. He encouraged writers to take scientific ideas seriously and to construct stories around technological and social concepts rather than simply using science as background decoration.
Asimov became one of Campbell's most important writers.
His early stories demonstrated the characteristics that would become associated with his work: scientific rationalism, intellectual puzzles, technological speculation and an interest in how human beings would respond to technological change.
Two subjects soon became particularly important: robots and the future of human civilization.
These would eventually become the foundations of his two greatest fictional achievements.
The Robot Stories
Asimov's robot fiction began in the early 1940s.

The stories explore increasingly sophisticated questions about artificial intelligence and robotics.
Asimov famously developed the Three Laws of Robotics:
- A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

The importance of these laws was not simply that they provided rules for robots.

Susan Calvin
Susan Calvin became one of Asimov's most memorable characters.
She is a brilliant robopsychologist who studies the behaviour of positronic robots.
Calvin is not primarily a heroic adventurer. She is a scientist.
This reflects something fundamental about Asimov's fiction.
His heroes are often people who think their way out of problems.
A mystery involving a robot is solved not by destroying the robot but by understanding its programming and psychology.
That approach became one of Asimov's trademarks.
The Elijah Baley Novels
Asimov later expanded his robot universe with a series of detective novels featuring Elijah Baley, a human detective, and R. Daneel Olivaw, an advanced humanoid robot.
The major novels are:
- The Caves of Steel (1954)
- The Naked Sun (1957)
- The Robots of Dawn (1983)
- Robots and Empire (1985)
The first two combine science fiction with detective fiction.
Baley investigates murders while trying to understand his robot partner and the society in which they live.
This allowed Asimov to explore a fascinating question:
What happens to humanity when technology becomes so advanced that human beings become uncomfortable with their own creations?
The stories also examine prejudice against robots, the relationship between humans and machines, urbanization, social isolation and the future expansion of humanity.
Foundation
If the Robot stories examined the relationship between humanity and technology, Foundation examined the future of civilization.
The original Foundation stories began appearing in Astounding Science-Fiction in 1942.
They were eventually collected into three books:
- Foundation (1951)
- Foundation and Empire (1952)
- Second Foundation (1953)
Together they became known as the Foundation Trilogy.
The premise was audacious.
A mathematician named Hari Seldon develops a new science called psychohistory.
Psychohistory combines mathematics, sociology and probability to predict the broad movements of human societies.
Seldon determines that the Galactic Empire is collapsing.
The collapse cannot be prevented.
But it can be managed.
According to Seldon's calculations, the fall of the Empire will be followed by a dark age lasting thousands of years. Seldon therefore establishes the Foundation, ostensibly to preserve human knowledge and reduce the length of the coming period of chaos.
The result is not a conventional space opera.
There is no single hero who saves the galaxy.
Instead, Asimov tells a story about civilizations.
Generations pass.
Governments rise and fall.
Characters appear and disappear.
The real protagonist is arguably history itself.
The Inspiration for Foundation
Asimov was heavily influenced by Edward Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.
He imagined what might happen if the Roman Empire were transformed into a Galactic Empire.
The Galactic Empire collapses.
Its provinces become independent kingdoms.
Political institutions decay.
Knowledge is lost.
Eventually a new civilization emerges.
The analogy is not exact, but the basic inspiration is clear.
Asimov was asking:
Could the rise and fall of civilizations be understood scientifically?
And perhaps even more importantly:
Could humanity learn to manage the process?
The Galactic Empire Novels
Asimov eventually wrote three novels that became known as his Galactic Empire series:
- Pebble in the Sky (1950)
- The Stars, Like Dust (1951)
- The Currents of Space (1952)
These were originally much less tightly connected than the later Foundation books.
They depicted different periods and situations within the developing Galactic Empire.
Later, Asimov incorporated them into his larger fictional chronology, placing them between the Robot stories and the Foundation era.
This was part of a larger project Asimov eventually undertook: turning several originally separate fictional universes into a single enormous history.
Asimov's Great Synthesis
One of the most remarkable things about Asimov's career is that the connections between his major series were not part of his original plan.
The Robot stories and Foundation stories began as separate projects.
Asimov wrote the early Foundation stories in the 1940s and the major Robot stories around the same period, without intending them to form one continuous fictional history.
Decades later, he began connecting them.
The Robots of Dawn (1983) contains an early connection between the Robot and Foundation stories. Robots and Empire (1985) then became an important bridge between the Robot and Galactic Empire settings.
Eventually, Asimov had created a fictional history stretching across approximately 20,000 years.
The Robot stories occupy the earliest part.
Humanity then expands throughout the galaxy.
The Galactic Empire emerges.
The Empire eventually collapses.
The Foundation attempts to manage the resulting crisis.
What had originally been several unrelated series became one enormous future history.
R. Daneel Olivaw: The Hidden Link
The key to connecting these stories was R. Daneel Olivaw.
Daneel begins as Elijah Baley's humanoid robot companion in the Robot novels.
But Asimov eventually made Daneel part of the much larger history of humanity.
The result is one of the most ambitious retroactive connections in science fiction.
Daneel becomes a link between the earliest robot stories and the distant future of Foundation.
The connection becomes explicit in Robots and Empire, Foundation's Edge and especially Foundation and Earth.
This means that the robot stories are no longer simply stories about the early development of artificial intelligence.
They become part of the story of how humanity came to colonize the galaxy and eventually create the Galactic Empire.
The Later Foundation Novels
After more than thirty years away from the series, Asimov returned to Foundation with Foundation's Edge in 1982.
It was a major success and encouraged him to continue the story.

These novels substantially expanded the original trilogy.

One of the most interesting elements of Foundation is the Mule.
The Mule is a mutant with extraordinary ability to manipulate human emotions.
His existence threatens Seldon's predictions.

Because psychohistory works statistically.
It can predict the behaviour of enormous populations.
But it cannot necessarily predict an extraordinary individual whose actions fundamentally alter those populations.
The Mule therefore raises an important philosophical problem:
Can history really be predicted?
Asimov's answer was essentially that large-scale social patterns may be predictable, but individuals and unexpected events can disrupt even the best model.
This is one reason Foundation remains intellectually interesting.
It is not simply a story about predicting the future.
It is a story about the limits of prediction.
Nightfall
Although Foundation and I, Robot dominate discussions of Asimov, he wrote many other important works.
One of his most celebrated stories is "Nightfall," first published in 1941.
The story takes place on a planet illuminated by multiple suns, where darkness is extremely rare. The inhabitants therefore have little experience of night.
When an astronomical event is about to bring darkness, civilization faces the possibility of psychological and social collapse.
The story is a classic example of Asimov's ability to take a scientific premise and ask a profound question about human psychology.
It also helped establish his reputation as one of the leading writers of the Golden Age.
Asimov the Popular Scientist
Asimov's influence cannot be measured only by his fiction.
He was also one of the greatest popularizers of science of the twentieth century.
He wrote accessible books about:
- chemistry;
- physics;
- astronomy;

- mathematics;
- history;
- evolution;
- the solar system;
- the universe.
His great strength was explaining complicated ideas in clear language.
This was closely connected to his science fiction.

The Three Laws have influenced:

More importantly, Asimov demonstrated that the most interesting question about artificial intelligence might not be "Can we build an intelligent machine?"

The influence of Foundation is equally significant.
Its idea of a vast future history influenced generations of writers.
Instead of concentrating on a single protagonist, Asimov could tell the story of societies across centuries.
This approach helped establish the concept of future history as an important form of science fiction.
The idea that an entire civilization could become the protagonist has become commonplace in modern science fiction.
Asimov was one of the writers who made it possible.
Asimov and Star Wars
Asimov's influence can also be seen indirectly in later popular science fiction.
The idea of a Galactic Empire, enormous interstellar civilizations and struggles between different political powers became common elements of the genre.
It would be wrong to say that Star Wars is simply an adaptation of Foundation. It is not.
But Asimov helped establish a vocabulary for imagining civilization on a galactic scale.
His influence extends throughout space opera, even when later writers were influenced by many other sources as well.
A More Complicated View of Technology
Asimov is sometimes described as an uncritical technological optimist.
That is too simple.
He certainly believed in science and technological progress.
But his stories repeatedly demonstrated that technology creates new problems.
Robots can help humanity—but they can also create dependency.
Psychohistory can help civilization—but attempts to control history can create unforeseen consequences.
Scientific knowledge can improve society—but institutions can misuse it.
The real subject of Asimov's fiction is therefore not technology itself.
It is humanity's relationship with technology and knowledge.
Why Asimov Still Matters
Asimov died in 1992, long before the modern explosion of artificial intelligence, commercial spaceflight and contemporary debates about machine learning.
Yet many of his questions seem remarkably current.
What rights should intelligent machines have?
Can artificial intelligence be controlled?
Can complex societies be predicted?
How should humanity respond to technological disruption?
What happens when civilizations become dependent upon increasingly complicated systems?
Can technological progress actually make humanity safer?
These are not merely science fiction questions anymore.
They are questions about the real world.

Isaac Asimov was one of the great architects of modern science fiction.
He helped transform robots from simple mechanical monsters into subjects for serious philosophical and ethical investigation.
