Robots have been part of science fiction almost from the beginning of the genre. They have been servants, companions, explorers, soldiers, villains and sometimes replacements for humanity itself.
What makes a great science-fiction robot is not simply its technology. The most memorable robots become characters. They tell us something about what it means to be human. Sometimes they represent our hopes for technology; sometimes they embody our fears.

R2-D2 and C-3PO
R2-D2 is inseparable from C-3PO, his protocol-droid companion.
C-3PO was also created by Lucas and first appeared in Star Wars in 1977. He is programmed for etiquette and translation and is fluent in more than seven million forms of communication according to the official Star Wars databank.
C-3PO is essentially R2-D2's opposite.
R2 is practical.
Threepio is intellectual.

Threepio never stops talking.

Marvin the Paranoid Android — The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Douglas Adams created Marvin as a satirical response to the conventional image of the helpful futuristic robot.
Instead of being enthusiastic about humanity's technological achievements, Marvin is depressed and bored by almost everything.
C-3PO
As noted above, C-3PO deserves a place alongside R2-D2. His combination of comic relief, linguistic ability and anxiety makes him one of cinema's most recognizable robots.
The Iron Giant
The title character of the 1999 animated film is another excellent example of a robot becoming a profoundly human character.
His story transforms the concept of a giant weapon into a meditation on choice and identity.
What Makes These Robots So Important?
Looking at these five characters reveals something interesting.
They represent different stages in the development of our relationship with technology.
